Lena Waithe\u2019s \u2018Queen & Slim\u2019 Takes Aim at Police Violence<\/h1>\n\n\n\n

When you\u2019re Living While Black in America, life can come at you fast. There are countless stories of black folk minding their own business and being harassed, assaulted, or gunned down by the police. Rarely do you hear of those roles being reversed\u2014or, at the very least, a situation where an interaction between a black person and a police officer ends with the officer being gunned down. That\u2019s the premise of\u00a0Queen & Slim<\/a><\/em>, the\u00a0Daniel Kaluuya<\/a>-starring project that\u2019s been whispered about for the last six months (and received\u00a0major buzz<\/a>\u00a0during CinemaCon back in April). This film marks the first feature-length project for multi-hyphenate\u00a0Lena Waithe<\/a>\u00a0and Melina Matsoukas (who serve as writer and director, respectively).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The week before Mardi Gras, Universal Pictures sent a select group of African American journalists and outlets to New Orleans to visit the set of what\u2019s been described as a \u201cblack Bonnie & Clyde<\/em>.\u201d The film (which hits theaters on November 27, 2019) is essentially a road movie, taking viewers on a cross-country trek with a black couple featuring the eponymous Queen & Slim<\/em>\u2014portrayed by fresh-faced Jodie Turner-Smith and Kaluuya respectively\u2014who are on the run from police after their terrible first date turns into a traffic stop that  ends with a cop being killed\u2014but Waithe has described<\/a> it in the past as \u201cprotest art.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI can’t always make it to the marches or the rallies,\u201d Waithe explained during a break in shooting, primarily due to how often she\u2019s working on shows like\u00a0The Chi<\/a><\/em>\u00a0or other projects she\u2019s involved in. \u201cWhen I sit down at my computer, that’s me. That’s my rallying cry. That’s me trying to figure out who we are.\u201d Waithe also understands why some might compare the film to\u00a0Bonnie & Clyde<\/em>\u00a0or\u00a0Thelma & Louise<\/em>, but she had a different classic in mind. \u201cIt’s such a huge compliment.\u00a0Bonnie & Clyde<\/em>\u00a0changed the conversation.\u00a0Thelma & Louise<\/em>\u00a0is iconic. But the thing that they aren’t realizing is another reference for me would be\u00a0Set It Off<\/em>. In terms of black people being at a very difficult place with their back being against the wall and nothing that they [can] do [but] to keep going.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
