He replied he doesn\u2019t believe he\u2019s pushing anything compared to what came before. So I remind him of cinema\u2019s growing sensitivity to controversial representations of sexuality in 2019. The French director\u2014whose latest film <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=Hi69nL_VrTE\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><i>Climax<\/i><\/a> (which is co-produced by VICE Studios), is a journey with a dance troupe lured into hallucinogenic states to the point of injury and death\u2014decides to answer in the most No\u00e9 way possible.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe fear of the penis in the United States still shocks me,\u201d he lets out during a phone exchange. \u201cIn many ways, the Western world is turning Victorian.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>If you\u2019ve ever seen a film by Gaspar No\u00e9, it would be downright disappointing not to hear the word \u201cpenis\u201d leave his mouth. The director is famed with his ability to unsettle viewers with equal parts beauty, sexuality and terror. You\u2019ll see it in works such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=OU-ZOHeWLkU&amp;t=\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><i>Irreversible<\/i><\/a><i> ,<\/i> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=NHH-TlSEKII\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><i>Love<\/i><\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=_tG_b5zaT9Y\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><i>Enter the Void<\/i><\/a>, and now in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=Hi69nL_VrTE\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><i>Climax<\/i><\/a> set for a March 1 limited release\u2014zero penises guaranteed.<\/p>\n<p>It takes a special kind of mind to come up with films that explore the dark depths of the human psyche. And thankfully, I got a chance to listen to the ideas that a mind like that will throw at you when questioned.
