Stop. Rewind! The cassette, long consigned to the bargain bin of musical history, is staging a humble comeback. Sales have soared in the last year \u2013 up 125% in 2018 on the year before \u2013 amounting to<a class=\"u-underline\" title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.officialcharts.com\/chart-news\/the-official-top-20-best-selling-cassettes-of-2018-so-far__23407\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-link-name=\"in body link\"> more than 50,000 cassette albums bought in the UK<\/a>, the highest volume in 15 years.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s quite a fall from <a class=\"u-underline\" title=\"\" href=\"http:\/\/news.bbc.co.uk\/1\/hi\/technology\/4099904.stm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">the format\u2019s peak in 1989 when 83 million cassettes were bought by British music fans<\/a>, but when everyone from pop superstar <a class=\"u-underline\" title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/music\/ariana-grande\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">Ariana Grande<\/a> to punk duo <a class=\"u-underline\" title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/music\/sleaford-mods\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">Sleaford Mods<\/a> are taking to tape, a mini revival seems afoot. But why?<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s the tangibility of having this collectible format and a way to play music that isn\u2019t just a stream or download,\u201d says techno <a class=\"u-underline\" title=\"\" href=\"http:\/\/www.phinlive.co.uk\/techno\/4591283105\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">DJ Phin<\/a>, who has just released her first EP on cassette as label boss of <a class=\"u-underline\" title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/soundcloud.com\/theoryofyesterday\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">Theory of Yesterday<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI find them much more attractive than CDs. Tapes have a lifespan, and unlike digital music, there is decay and death.
