But it\u2019s the incandescent performance of <strong>Richard E. Grant<\/strong>that sends the dark British comedy\u2014about a couple of out-of-work actors\u2014into the stratosphere of greatness.<\/p>\n<p data-reactid=\"221\">So it\u2019s less weird than it might at first seem that the movie which screened at New York\u2019s Film Forum on Thursday night wasn\u2019t the one that has earned Grant a best-supporting-actor Oscar nomination\u2014<strong>Marielle Heller\u2019s<\/strong> <em>Can You Ever Forgive Me?,<\/em> starring <strong>Melissa McCarthy<\/strong>\u2014but the one that forged his legend more than three decades ago.<\/p>\n<p data-reactid=\"223\">Over coffee in Brooklyn, I asked Grant if he could tell when he read the script for <em>Withnail and I<\/em> that it was a role for the ages? \u201cI knew it bone-deep,\u201d he said. \u201cIt made me laugh out loud, it was so brilliantly written. Even the stage directions were hilarious.
