Writer\u00a0James Frey<\/strong>\u00a0may have taken a beating in the literary world for his partly fictionalized memoir\u00a0A Million Little Pieces<\/em>\u2014 for which\u00a0Oprah Winfrey<\/strong>\u00a0famously took him to task\u2014but he\u2019s a growing force on the art scene. Pal\u00a0Richard Prince<\/strong>\u00a0designed the cover for Frey\u2019s recent novel,\u00a0Bright Shiny Morning<\/em>, and the author has boldly commemorated his Oprah humiliation by commissioning a painting,\u00a0Public Stoning<\/em>, above, from\u00a0Ed Ruscha<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

What did Ruscha make of the request? \u201cHe laughed and then said \u2018absolutely,\u2019\u201d says Frey. The painting is on view this month in New York\u2014not at the\u00a0Half Gallery<\/strong>, which Frey owns with designer\u00a0Andy Spade<\/strong>\u00a0and former\u00a0Black Book<\/em>\u00a0magazine editor\u00a0Bill Powers<\/strong>, but at the\u00a0Flag Art Foundation<\/strong>, in the show \u201cWall Rockets\u201d, for which Frey has written a catalogue essay. And that\u2019s the truth.<\/p>\n
