Americans Philip Roth and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/search.breitbart.com\/q?s=Joyce%20Carol%20Oates&amp;sid=breitbart.com\" rel=\"nofollow\" class=\" lingo_link\" style=\"cursor: pointer; display: inline; font-family: Arial; font-size: 14px; font-weight: normal; font-style: normal; color: #023883; text-decoration: underline\" target=\"_blank\">Joyce Carol Oates<\/a>\u00a0usually figure in speculation, but Engdahl wouldn&#8217;t comment on any names.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"lingo_region\">Speaking generally about American literature, however, he said U.S. writers are &#8220;too sensitive to trends in their own mass culture,&#8221; dragging down the quality of their work.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"lingo_region\">The U.S. is too isolated, too insular.
