Japan to test mini &#8216;space elevator&#8217;<\/h1>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/mU6uEXnQYaA\" width=\"480\" height=\"292\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>A Japanese team working to develop a &#8220;space elevator&#8221; will conduct a first trial this month, blasting off a miniature version on satellites to test the technology.<\/p>\n<p>The test equipment, produced by researchers at Shizuoka University, will hitch a ride on an H-2B rocket being launched by Japan&#8217;s <a class=\"textTag\" href=\"https:\/\/phys.org\/tags\/space\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener tag\">space<\/a> agency from southern island of Tanegashima next week.<\/p>\n<p>The test involves a miniature elevator stand-in\u2014a box just six centimetres (2.4 inches) long, three centimetres wide, and three centimetres high.<\/p>\n<p>If all goes well, it will provide proof of concept by moving along a 10-metre cable suspended in space between two <a class=\"textTag\" href=\"https:\/\/phys.org\/tags\/mini+satellites\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener tag\">mini satellites<\/a> that will keep it taut.<\/p>\n<p>The mini-elevator will travel along the cable from a container in one of the satellites.<\/p>\n<p>[ <a href=\"https:\/\/phys.org\/news\/2018-09-japan-mini-space-elevator.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">click to continue reading at phys.org<\/a> ]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>from Phys.org Going up!
