Courtesy of Sotheby&#8217;s London.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The world\u2019s first public movie screening was a far cry from today\u2019s red carpet premieres, with just 30 people in attendance for an event that lasted some 20 minutes at a Parisian cafe on December 28, 1895. Now, Sotheby\u2019s is auctioning the poster for that event, held by filmmaker brothers\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.artnet.com\/artists\/auguste-lumiere\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Auguste Lumi\u00e8re<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.artnet.com\/artists\/louis-jean-lumiere\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Louis Jean Lumi\u00e8re<\/a>. It is likely the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sothebys.com\/buy\/e399a0d9-346e-427a-876a-cf84a04fce4a\/lots\/bee6cf77-28c6-481e-99c2-39af21a8d1b2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">first film poster ever made<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The design by\u00a0artist <a href=\"http:\/\/www.artnet.com\/artists\/henri-brispot\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Henri Brispot<\/a> is one of 164 rare film posters for sale in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sothebys.com\/buy\/e399a0d9-346e-427a-876a-cf84a04fce4a\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">an online auction<\/a>\u00a0held by Sotheby\u2019s London beginning August 28.\u00a0The poster, which optimistically predicted a much larger crowd than the premiere actually received, carries a pre-sale estimate of \u00a340,000 to \u00a360,000 ($50,830 to $76,240).
