He was killed by a guard in 1971 after taking guards and two inmates hostage in a bid to escape from San Quentin State Prison in California.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p-text\">The final day of the strike\u00a0\u2014 Sept. 9\u00a0\u2014 also carries symbolism. That&#8217;s the day in 1971 that the Attica Prison riots began in New York, eventually leaving more than 40 people dead when police stormed in to re-take the facility.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p-text\">Prisoners leading the protests say the strike is aimed at ending what they call &#8220;modern-day slavery.&#8221; Inmates complain they are paid pennies on the dollar per hour for labor.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p-text\">This is made legal by an exemption in the 13th Amendment which\u00a0allows\u00a0involuntary servitude for those who convicted of\u00a0crimes in the United States.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p-text\">The event is spearheaded by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/BlkJailhouselawyer\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-track-label=\"inline|intext|n\/a\">Jailhouse Lawyers Speak<\/a>, a network of imprisoned prisoner rights advocates based out of Lee\u00a0Correctional Institution in South Carolina and supported by the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/incarceratedworkers.org\/about\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-track-label=\"inline|intext|n\/a\">Incarcerated Workers Organizing Committee<\/a> (IWOC), a prisoner-led trade group.<\/p>\n<p>[ <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/news\/2018\/08\/21\/prisoners-strike-protest-attica-lee-correctional\/1045008002\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">click to continue reading at USAT<\/a> ]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>from USA Today Prisoners nationwide go on strike to protest &#8216;modern-day slavery&#8217; by\u00a0Dalvin Brown Prison inmates nationwide, seeking to\u00a0put pressure on the country&#8217;s penal\u00a0system, began a two-week strike on Tuesday.
