<\/strong>Where are you right now?<\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

Amagansett<\/span>, NY<\/span>. At my desk.<\/span><\/p>\n

Where do you write?<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Sometimes here, sometimes New York City. Have desks in both places. Sometimes I sit on a couch in front of the TV.<\/span><\/p>\n

How do you write?<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Just sit down and work. Focus on one sentence at a time. Never self-edit, never go back. I don\u2019t use outlines figure everything out as I go.<\/span><\/p>\n

What keeps you writing?<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

I love it, and it\u2019s my job.<\/span><\/p>\n

Who do you write for?<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

For myself, and for the readers who support me.<\/span><\/p>\n

Do you discuss your work with anyone?<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Not really. At least not while I\u2019m writing something. I end up discussing it when it\u2019s finished because that\u2019s part of the job.<\/span><\/p>\n

How do you know if your work is good?<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

I just believe it is.<\/span><\/p>\n

Do you have any unwritten characters in mind?<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Hundreds.<\/span><\/p>\n

Which book do you wish you\u2019d written?<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

A Season in Hell<\/a>, by Arthur Rimbaud<\/span><\/p>\n

What is your literary guilty pleasure?<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Detective books. I love detective books. Chandler, Hammett, Spillane, Simenon.<\/span><\/p>\n

Which writer made you want to write?<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Many, but Henry Miller probably had the most influence. He lit me up. Still does.<\/span><\/p>\n

Who\u2019s the most exciting author writing today?<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Most are pretty boring. I\u2019d probably say Michel Houellebecq. One of the few who invites controversy, instead of hiding from it.<\/span><\/p>\n

If you weren\u2019t writing you\u2019d be\u2026?<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

No idea. Can\u2019t imagine another life.<\/span><\/p>\n

What next?<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

The Final Testament of the Holy Bible. And I\u2019m not joking.<\/span><\/p>\n
