And it\u2019s like nothing you\u2019ve ever seen before.<\/h2>\n<p>by\u00a0<a class=\"ArticleAuthor__name\" href=\"https:\/\/www.thedailybeast.com\/author\/nick-schager\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">NICK SCHAGER<\/a><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/BXuoTe8ma1s\" width=\"480\" height=\"292\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>\u201cPornography is an act of insurrection against the dominant order,\u201d states Big Mother (Susanne Sachsse), the matriarch of an all-female boarding school, in The Misandrists, and those familiar with the work of writer\/director Bruce LaBruce (<em>Otto; or Up with Dead People<\/em>, <em>Gerontophilia<\/em>) will immediately recognize it as a sly proclamation of his own philosophy.<\/p>\n<p>For the past thirty years, whether helming short or feature-length productions, or working as a writer and photographer, LaBruce has pushed boundaries with a pure, unadulterated transgressive spirit. An assured filmmaker who rose to prominence as a vanguard of 1990s queercore cinema, he\u2019s akin to <a class=\"TrackingLink LinkWrapper\" href=\"https:\/\/www.thedailybeast.com\/john-waters-on-police-brutality-in-baltimore-sex-in-voting-booths-and-the-insanity-of-fox-news\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a more extreme John Waters<\/a>, blending philosophy and comedy with explicit sexual material in order to poke, prod and reproach any and all status quos.<\/p>\n<p>Having spent much of his career making films about\u2014and with\u2014gay male actors, LaBruce turns his strict attention to the fairer sex with his latest, although it\u2019s not fairness that his female protagonists are after, but rebellion and domination. Playing like the bonkers bastard child of <em><a class=\"TrackingLink LinkWrapper\" href=\"https:\/\/www.thedailybeast.com\/sofia-coppolas-the-beguiled-and-what-we-expect-from-white-directors\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Beguiled<\/a><\/em> and <em>Cecil B. Demented<\/em>, <em>The Misandrists<\/em> (debuting in New York on May 25, and L.A. on June 1) situates itself in Ger(wo)many circa 1999, at a remote institution of revolutionary learning run by Big Mother, the charismatic leader of the Female Liberation Army (FLA), who sports long bleached-white locks and two crutches to help her get around.
