Players rushed to get out of the way as the driver\u2014police later identified her as 52-year-old Carol Sharrow\u2014 barely missed them, curving toward home base then away again. She was looking for an exit and spotted a gate. More kids were in danger on the other side.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">A witness named Justin Clifton later <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newscentermaine.com\/article\/news\/local\/man-dies-after-baseball-game-hit-and-run-woman-charged-with-manslaughter\/97-560776239\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span class=\"s2\">told a Maine news station<\/span><\/a> what happened next. He said he \u201csaw the car pull out of the [\u2026] and this guy had some kids with him.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Clifton said that when the car \u201ccame to the gate, the older guy pushed the kids right out of the way. He took the hit for the kids.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">So, Douglas Parkhurst, age 68, died taking that \u201chit for the kids.\u201d The Vietnam vet was the hero of the moment and a tragic one at that. A man who in photos appeared ruddy, fit for his age, with a winning smile.
