This composite track is part of a trackway in which the human appears to have stalked the sloth.\u00a0<span class=\"credit\">(Photo: Matthew Bennett, Bournemouth University)<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"speakable-p-1 p-text\">Although it sounds like a grade-B science fiction movie, fossils that our ancestors once hunted and fought giant ground sloths.<\/p>\n<p class=\"speakable-p-2 p-text\">For the first time, scientists have uncovered fossilized footprints of ancient humans at the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nps.gov\/whsa\/index.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">White Sands National Monument<\/a> in New Mexico, a <a href=\"http:\/\/advances.sciencemag.org\/content\/4\/4\/eaar7621\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">new study<\/a> reports. And at the same site,\u00a0those newly discovered human footprints were actually inside\u00a0footprints of giant ground sloths \u2014 tall, fearsome creatures with sharp claws.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p-text\">Scientists say this is evidence that the humans followed closely behind, or even \u201cstalked\u201d the sloths during the hunt.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p-text\">&#8220;The White Sands trackway \u2014 a series of tracks and footprints\u00a0\u2014 shows that someone followed a sloth, purposely stepping in their tracks as they did so,&#8221; said study lead author <a href=\"https:\/\/www.researchgate.net\/profile\/David_Bustos\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">David Bustos<\/a>, the park naturalist who discovered the trackway 10 years ago.<\/p>\n<p>[ <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/news\/2018\/04\/25\/giant-ground-sloths-ancient-human-hunting\/549810002\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">click to continue reading at USAT<\/a> ]<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>from USA Today Giant sloths with wolverine-like claws used to roam America, and humans hunted them by\u00a0Doyle Rice Human footprint inside a sloth track.
