This summer, researchers found one alive and thriving off the coast of Portugal, uncovering more clues about\u00a0the resilience of this ancient sea creature.<\/p>\n<p>The researchers who discovered the shark off the Algarve coast were working on a European Union project in the area,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/blogs-news-from-elsewhere-41928537\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">the BBC<\/a> reported. The goal of the project was to &#8220;minimize unwanted catches in commercial fishing,&#8221; the researchers told <a href=\"http:\/\/sicnoticias.sapo.pt\/pais\/2017-11-07-Tubarao-cobra-capturado-no-Algarve\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">SIC Noticisas T<\/a>V, as the BBC noted,\u00a0but the team unknowingly unearthed one of the rarest and most ancient animals on the planet.<\/p>\n<p>Scientists believe the frilled shark has remained the same, both inside and out, since\u00a0the Cretaceous Period,\u00a0when the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.prehistory.com\/timeline\/cretace.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Tyrannosaurus rex and Triceratops<\/a> still roamed the planet.
