This fish is rarely seen by humans but has lived on the Earth since long before man.<\/em><\/p>\n

The rare frilled shark is considered a \u201cliving fossil\u201d because evidence of its existence dates back\u00a0to at least 80 million years ago. This summer, researchers found one alive and thriving off the coast of Portugal, uncovering more clues about\u00a0the resilience of this ancient sea creature.<\/p>\n

The researchers who discovered the shark off the Algarve coast were working on a European Union project in the area,\u00a0the BBC<\/a> reported. The goal of the project was to “minimize unwanted catches in commercial fishing,” the researchers told SIC Noticisas T<\/a>V, as the BBC noted,\u00a0but the team unknowingly unearthed one of the rarest and most ancient animals on the planet.<\/p>\n

Scientists believe the frilled shark has remained the same, both inside and out, since\u00a0the Cretaceous Period,\u00a0when the Tyrannosaurus rex and Triceratops<\/a> still roamed the planet. The creature, known by scientists as\u00a0Chlamydoselachus anguineus<\/em>,\u00a0is incredibly simple and unevolved, most likely due to the lack of nutrients<\/a> found in its deep-sea dwellings.\u00a0A\u00a0Japanese study<\/a> of\u00a0the\u00a0shark found in Suruga Bay, Japan,\u00a0revealed that its diet is 61 percent cephalopods\u2014the class to which\u00a0squids and octopus belong.<\/p>\n
