A Las Vegas hotel mogul plans to send an inflatable space hotel into orbit around the moon by 2022<\/h1>\n

Bigelow Aerospace, a Las Vegas-based space pod company,\u00a0wants to send an inflatable space hotel\u00a0to orbit the moon, with\u00a0accommodations for astronauts and citizen space travelers alike.<\/p>\n

The company partnered with NASA in 2016 to attach\u00a0an inflatable, soft-shell demo pod onto the\u00a0International Space Station. Now, Bigelow\u00a0has announced that a bigger inflatable pod, which it’s calling the B330 “lunar depot”, could be\u00a0orbiting the moon in five years.<\/p>\n

That moon station is much more ambitious\u00a0than Bigelow’s ISS add-on. It’s\u00a0designed to stand alone\u00a0and is about a third of the size of the ISS.\u00a0The company<\/a>\u00a0suggests\u00a0the pod\u00a0could hold roughly\u00a0six people, and is\u00a0billing\u00a0it as a hub for “significant lunar business development.”<\/p>\n

Providing accommodations for future space travelers is a logical next step for the company’s founder, Robert Bigelow, who owns the Budget Suites of America\u00a0hotel chain and has been working on\u00a0creating expandable space modules since 1999.<\/p>\n

United Launch Alliance, a joint venture between Boeing and Lockheed Martin, plans to partner with Bigelow to\u00a0launch\u00a0the habitat into space, then\u00a0get\u00a0it\u00a0circling around the\u00a0moon.<\/p>\n
