Romero<\/a>, the director who all but invented the modern zombie genre with his 1968 horror classic\u00a0<em><a id=\"auto-tag_night-of-the-living-dead\" href=\"http:\/\/deadline.com\/tag\/night-of-the-living-dead\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-tag=\"night-of-the-living-dead\">Night of the Living Dead<\/a>,<\/em>\u00a0has died at 77 of lung cancer.<\/p>\n<p>Infused with social commentary and a realistic, midnight-movie terror, Romero\u2019s brazenly stark thriller, and the sequels that followed, made as large an impact on the genre and a culture\u2019s nightmares as any horror film since the Universal Studios monster chillers of the 1930s.<\/p>\n<p>The Pittsburgh native\u2019s low-budget, black and white film went from cult favorite to blockbuster franchise with Romero\u2019s 1978 sequel\u00a0<em>Dawn of the Dead,<\/em> 1985\u2019s <em>Day of the Dead<\/em> (1985), <em>Land of the Dead (<\/em>2005), <em>Diary of the Dead<\/em> (2007) and finally 2009\u2019s <em>Survival of the Dead.<\/em>\u00a0His take on the vampire genre,\u00a0<em>Martin,<\/em> was released in 1978, and he wrote the 1990 <em>Night<\/em>\u00a0remake, directed by Tom Savini.<\/p>\n<p>As a producer, Romero delivered TV\u2019s seminal 1980s horror anthology <em>Tales From the Dark Side<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHard to quantify how much he inspired me &amp; what he did for cinema,\u201d tweeted <em>Hostel<\/em> director Eli Roth.
