His career, while long, steady and admired, has never exceeded cult status. It\u2019s an example of can\u2019t-see-the-tree-for-the-forest visibility.<\/p>\n<p>The influence of Mr. Saul\u2019s paintings, with their cartoony figures, lurid-lush colors, splatter-film expressionism and contrarian take on topical subjects, pervades recent art. It has contributed mightily to major careers, like those of\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/topics.nytimes.com\/top\/reference\/timestopics\/people\/d\/carroll_dunham\/index.html?inline=nyt-per\" target=\"_blank\" style=\"color: #000066\" title=\"More articles about Carroll Dunham.\">Carroll Dunham<\/a>\u00a0and Elizabeth Murray. And it has paved the way for the neo-Surrealist noodlings of countless student painters spilling out of art schools and straight into the arms of a ravenous market.<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Saul\u2019s art is not pretty, though it has many eye-catching pleasures. Nor is it polite. Indeed, the artist makes zealous efforts to ensure the opposite. In America today, he says in a catalog interview, \u201cthere\u2019s a tremendous need to not be seen as racist, not seen as sexist. So I want to make sure I am seen as those things.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/slideshow\/2008\/08\/16\/arts\/design\/20080816_SAUL_SLIDESHOW_7.html\" title=\"Peter Saul's BLAST (1961)\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/graphics8.nytimes.com\/images\/2008\/08\/16\/arts\/slide.blast.jpg\" align=\"left\" height=\"340\" width=\"240\" hspace=\"15\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a>He succeeds. What museum would be the right one for a painting of a knife-wielding\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/topics.nytimes.com\/top\/reference\/timestopics\/people\/s\/o_j_simpson\/index.html?inline=nyt-per\" target=\"_blank\" style=\"color: #000066\" title=\"More articles about O. J. Simpson.\">O. J. Simpson<\/a>\u00a0strapped down for execution as a buxom blond angel points to a blood-stained glove and intones, \u201cThis is why you have to die\u201d? Or for a picture of\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/topics.nytimes.com\/top\/reference\/timestopics\/people\/c\/christopher_columbus\/index.html?inline=nyt-per\" target=\"_blank\" style=\"color: #000066\" title=\"More articles about Christopher Columbus.\">Christopher Columbus<\/a>\u00a0slaughtering New World natives who themselves hold platters of chopped human limbs in their arms?<\/p>\n<p>What is the appropriate place for art that stirs together John Wayne Gacy and Angela Davis, Mickey Mouse and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/topics.nytimes.com\/top\/reference\/timestopics\/people\/r\/ethel_rosenberg\/index.html?inline=nyt-per\" target=\"_blank\" style=\"color: #000066\" title=\"More articles about Ethel Rosenberg.\">Ethel Rosenberg<\/a>, Stalin and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/topics.nytimes.com\/top\/reference\/timestopics\/people\/d\/willem_de_kooning\/index.html?inline=nyt-per\" target=\"_blank\" style=\"color: #000066\" title=\"More articles about Willem De Kooning.\">Willem de Kooning<\/a>, Basil Wolverton and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/topics.nytimes.com\/top\/reference\/timestopics\/people\/b\/george_w_bush\/index.html?inline=nyt-per\" target=\"_blank\" style=\"color: #000066\" title=\"More articles about George W.
