level of consciousness, scientists claim<\/h1>\n<p><strong>However the increased brain activity detected is not actually &#8216;better&#8217;, according to the researchers<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>by\u00a0<a title=\"Ian Johnston\" href=\"http:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/author\/ian-johnston\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ian Johnston<\/a><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" title=\"psychedelic.ala.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/static.independent.co.uk\/s3fs-public\/styles\/article_small\/public\/thumbnails\/image\/2014\/07\/02\/23\/psychedelic.ala.jpg\" alt=\"psychedelic.ala.jpg\" width=\"480\" \/><em>The cover of the Incredible String Band\u2019s second LP, released in 1967, showed psychedelia\u2019s influence on music and art\u00a0<span class=\"copyright\">Jeff Morgan\/Alamy<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p>Scientists claim to have found the first evidence that psychedelic\u00a0<span class=\"vm-hook-outer vm-hook-default\"><span class=\"vm-hook\">drugs<\/span><\/span>\u00a0create a \u201chigher level of consciousness\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>LSD, the &#8220;date rape&#8221;\u00a0drug ketamine and psilocybin, the\u00a0<span class=\"vm-hook-outer vm-hook-default\"><span class=\"vm-hook\">active<\/span><\/span>ingredient of magic mushrooms, were all found to increase the tiny magnetic fields produced by the brain.<\/p>\n<p>This is used to create a mathematical measure of the complexity of brain activity, with people who are asleep having a lower level than people who are awake.<\/p>\n<p>Professor Anil Seth, co-director of the Sackler Centre for Consciousness Science at Sussex University, said: \u201cThis finding shows that the brain-on-psychedelics behaves very differently from normal.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDuring the psychedelic state, the electrical activity of the brain is less predictable and less \u2018integrated\u2019 than during normal conscious wakefulness \u2013 as measured by \u2018global signal diversity\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>However the scientists stressed the higher levels seen in people on the psychedelic drugs did not actually equate to something that was &#8220;better&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>[ <a href=\"http:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/news\/science\/lsd-first-evidence-higher-level-consciousness-hallucinogenic-drug-scientists-a7690366.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">click to continue reading at The Independent<\/a> ]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>from The Independent First evidence found that LSD produces &#8216;higher&#8217;
