Then things got weird.<\/h1>\n<p>By <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/people\/avi-selk\" target=\"_blank\">Avi Selk<\/a><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/iz2NfmRSQc4\" width=\"480\" height=\"270\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>On the day of President Trump\u2019s inauguration, two poorly understood\u00a0forces of the Internet collided in a sort of bizarre death lock \u2014 a struggle that has manifested in the real world\u00a0as Nazi-costumed dances in New York, a meticulously planned theft in\u00a0rural Tennessee and last month, a raid on a British rooftop.<\/p>\n<p>These forces are called 4chan and Shia LaBeouf.<\/p>\n<p>LaBeouf is a Hollywood star who recently restyled himself as a highly meme-able performance artist \u2014 limiting his public utterances to a string of repeat tweets, for example, or showing up to a film festival\u00a0with a paper bag on his head.<\/p>\n<p>4chan is the magmatic underworld of the Internet: an anonymous forum whose millions of users gave the world the delights of Rickrolling, the misogyny of Gamergate and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/news\/the-intersect\/wp\/2016\/09\/14\/why-pepe-the-frogs-nazi-phase-doesnt-worry-his-creator\/?tid=a_inl&amp;utm_term=.46683cb8772f\" target=\"_blank\">corruption of Pepe the Frog.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Lately, 4chan\u2019s\u00a0vast energies have been spent disrupting a single webcam. LaBeouf\u2019s art group installed the camera\u00a0outside a museum in New York on Jan. 20, inviting the public to join the star in chanting: \u201cHe will not divide us \u2026 he will not divide us.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/hewillnotdivide.us\/\" target=\"_blank\">He Will Not Divide Us<\/a>\u201d\u00a0was supposed to last the duration of Trump\u2019s first term.<\/p>\n<p>Almost instantly, 4chan users turned the live feed\u00a0into hell\u2019s own reality show.<\/p>\n<p class=\"interstitial-link\"><i>[<a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/news\/the-intersect\/wp\/2014\/09\/25\/absolutely-everything-you-need-to-know-to-understand-4chan-the-internets-own-bogeyman\/?utm_term=.810c593afe7f\" target=\"_blank\">Absolutely everything you need to know to understand 4chan, the Internet\u2019s own bogeyman<\/a>] <\/i><\/p>\n<p>Dubbed \u201cSeason 1\u201d on 4chan and associated\u00a0forums, the New York live stream was forced to relocate after self-professed neo-Nazis and other disrupters kept making cameos \u2014 provoking LaBeouf until he was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/news\/reliable-source\/wp\/2017\/01\/26\/shia-labeouf-arrested-at-his-anti-trump-art-installation\/?utm_term=.c126f5c19b7c\" target=\"_blank\">arrested and accused of\u00a0assaulting a troll<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Since then, the struggle has shifted to Seasons 2 through 4 \u2014\u00a0in which\u00a0trolls pursued the webcam across the United States, until\u00a0the artists were forced to\u00a0replace the\u00a0public chanting with a live feed of a guarded flag, which forum users have twice found and tried to steal, most recently on a rooftop in Britain.<\/p>\n<p>[ <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/news\/the-intersect\/wp\/2017\/04\/02\/a-livestream-of-shia-labeouf-chanting-was-disrupted-by-nazi-themed-dancing-then-things-got-weird\/\" target=\"_blank\">click to continue reading at WaPo<\/a> ]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>from The Washington Post A live stream of Shia LaBeouf chanting was disrupted by Nazi-themed dancing.
