(Photograph by Jonathan Kozowyk)<\/p>\n<p>Late last spring, Lila DeLuca, a braided 10-year-old Rockporter, quietly slipped off to Los Angeles. She reported to her elementary school that she would be accompanying her father, Scott, on an \u201cindefinite business trip.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This, of course, was cover for the strict code of silence the Fox Broadcasting Company imposes upon its\u00a0<em>MasterChef<\/em>\u00a0contestants \u2014 even the juniors.<\/p>\n<p>In her 2016 audition video, DeLuca had proven to the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.fox.com\/masterchef-junior\" target=\"_blank\"><em>MasterChef<\/em>\u00a0<em>Junior<\/em><\/a>\u00a0talent team that she had the right stuff to be one of the 40 kids qualified to endure \u2014 with all due adorableness \u2014 celebrity chef\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gordonramsay.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Gordon Ramsay<\/a>\u2019s famously menacing temper and the lofty standards of his co-host\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/milkbarstore.com\/main\/press\/\" target=\"_blank\">Christina Tosi<\/a>, the high priestess of pastry at New York\u2019s Momofuku Milk Bar.<\/p>\n<p>For the next six weeks, DeLuca would proceed to\u00a0<em>cro<\/em><em>\u00fbton<\/em>,\u00a0<em>coulis<\/em>, caramelize, and squeal for joy \u2014 like 10-year-olds do. While the show has concluding taping and the results are in, DeLuca is prohibited from sharing any of the juicy details. But she can say that, yes, there\u00a0<em>was<\/em>\u00a0school (as California laws require).
