You could say, of course, we\u2019re due, but it\u2019s a random course at that point.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"u-underline\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/science\/comets\" target=\"_blank\" data-link-name=\"auto-linked-tag\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\">Comets<\/a>\u00a0follow distant paths from Earth but sometimes get knocked into the neighborhood. Nuth said that the Earth had \u201ca close encounter\u201d in 1996, when an aberrant comet flew into Jupiter, and then again in 2014, when a comet passed \u201cwithin cosmic spitting distance of Mars\u201d.
