Laetoli in northern Tanzania is the site of iconic ancient footprints, capturing the moment \u2013 3.66 million years ago \u2013 when three members of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.newscientist.com\/article\/2114719-early-hominin-lucy-had-powerful-arms-from-years-of-tree-climbing\/\" target=\"_blank\">Lucy\u2019s species (<em>Australopithecus afarensis)<\/em><\/a>\u00a0strode out across the landscape.<\/p>\n<p>Now something quite unexpected has come to light: the footprints of two other individuals.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur discovery left us without words,\u201d says\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/unnipg.academia.edu\/MarcoCherin\" target=\"_blank\">Marco Cherin<\/a>\u00a0at the University of Perugia, Italy.<\/p>\n<p>The find looks set to transform our understanding of the Laetoli site and the social dynamics of australopiths, as well as their style of walking.<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.newscientist.com\/article\/mg14519601-800-steps-to-preserve-oldest-footprints\/\" target=\"_blank\">original Laetoli footprints were discovered in 1976<\/a>. Nothing quite like them had ever been found before.
