\u2018Star Wars\u2019 Kenny Baker Dies: R2-D2 Actor Was\u00a081<\/h1>\n

Kenny Baker<\/a>, the 3-foot, 8-inch actor who played beloved robot\u00a0R2-D2<\/a>\u00a0in six\u00a0Star Wars<\/em>\u00a0films beginning with the 1977 original, has died at his home in\u00a0Preston, England\u00a0following a lengthy illness. He was 81.<\/p>\n

The British Baker had roles in\u00a0Time Bandits<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0The Elephant Man<\/em>, TV\u2019s\u00a0The Goodies<\/em>, among others, but it\u2019s his work inside\u00a0Star Wars<\/em>\u2018\u00a0beeping, whirring little white, silver and blue robot that brought him worldwide and lasting fame. (Coincidentally, TCM aired\u00a0Time Bandits<\/em>\u00a0Saturday afternoon as part of the channel\u2019s 24-hour tribute to actor Ralph Richardson).<\/p>\n

\u201cHe did extremely well in \u00a0his life,\u201d Shield said. \u201cHe was very ill for the last few years so we had been expecting it. He had been looked after by one of his nephews who found him on Saturday morning.\u201d<\/p>\n

Baker played R2-D2 in\u00a0Star Wars, The Empire Strikes Back, Return of the Jedi<\/em>and the three prequels that kicked off in 1999.<\/p>\n

Shield said her uncle was told as a child that he \u201cprobably wouldn\u2019t survive through puberty, being a little person in those times, they didn\u2019t have a very good life expectancy.\u201d<\/p>\n
