Tonic’s Jeff Russo on Scoring ‘American Gothic,’ ‘Fargo’ & Marvel’s ‘Legion,’ Plus the 20th Anniversary of ‘Lemon Parade’<\/h1>\n

Jeff Russo, the composer for new CBS series, \u201cAmerican Gothic.\u201d \/\u00a0JUSTINE UNGARO<\/em><\/p>\n

It\u2019s nearly impossible to turn on the TV and not hear music by Jeff Russo. The\u00a0Fargo<\/em>composer, who is also a guitarist with the Grammy-nominated band\u00a0Tonic<\/a>, scores a staggering six television series either currently airing or in production.<\/p>\n

His newest,\u00a0American Gothic<\/em>, co-produced by Steven Spielberg\u2019s Amblin Television, debuts Wednesday on CBS. The 13-episode drama, starring Virginia Madsen, Juliet Rylance and Justin Chatwin, revolves around a prominent Boston family whose patriarch may be involved in an series of unsolved murders.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s just super thrilling to have the word ‘Amblin’ associated with anything I\u2019m working on,\u201d Russo, 46, says. \u201cI\u2019m thrilled to be under the same fold as someone as great as Steven Spielberg and John Williams, who is probably my favorite composer of all time.\u201d<\/p>\n

In addition to Season 3 of FX\u2019s\u00a0Fargo<\/em>, for which he earned an Emmy nod for best original dramatic score in 2014, Russo is also working on\u00a0Fargo<\/em>\u00a0producer Noah Hawley\u2019s new Marvel series\u00a0Legion,\u00a0<\/em>the third season of Starz\u2019s\u00a050 Cent<\/a>-produced drama\u00a0Power<\/em>, upcoming HBO limited series\u00a0The Night Of<\/em>, and ABC\u2019s Kevin Williamson-helmed 2017 show\u00a0Time After Time.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n

Russo talked to\u00a0Billboard<\/em>\u00a0about each series, as well as the 20th anniversary of Tonic\u2019s debut album, 1996\u2019s\u00a0Lemon Parade<\/em>, best known for the\u00a0Mainstream Rock Songs<\/a>\u00a0chart-topper \u201cIf You Could Only See.\u201d<\/p>\n

American Gothic<\/em>, CBS (June 22)<\/strong>
\n\u201cWe do the show with a small orchestra, about 16 strings and five woodwinds, but it is understated. The idea was we didn\u2019t want to be heavy-handed with the music because when you do that, all of a sudden, you\u2019re melodrama. This show is left of center — like the grandson who\u2019s a little weird — and that was part of the choice to lean toward the oddity of it. We\u2019re trying to give the show a more cinematic and cable feel. A lot of times on network television, you have wall-to-wall music and shows tend to lean on music to help build the narrative, whereas in movies and cable, we have a way of allowing the dialogue to do what it\u2019s going to do, allowing the emotion to land and then play. We\u2019re trying to score it less and let the score be more meaningful. We\u2019re definitely not playing the emotion or the drama on the nose.”<\/p>\n
