BENETT\/GETTY IMAGES<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<div class=\"caption\">\n<p data-emphasis-key=\"paragraphAlfAlf\" data-emphasis-ord=\"0\">A\u00a0<a class=\"red\" href=\"http:\/\/www.vulture.com\/2016\/04\/russo-brothers-captain-america-c-v-r.html\" target=\"_blank\">long feature<\/a>\u00a0in\u00a0<em>New York<\/em>\u00a0magazine hails the Russo brothers director team \u2014 Joe and Anthony, who grew up in Cleveland \u2014 as \u201cthe future of Hollywood.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-emphasis-key=\"paragraphNYsNYs\" data-emphasis-ord=\"1\"><em>New York<\/em>\u00a0says they have just directed \u201cwhat may well turn out to be this year\u2019s highest-grossing movie (\u2018Captain America: Civil War,\u2019 in theaters May 6), which is already garnering rapturous fanboy prerelease buzz \u2014 and they\u2019re at work on two other blockbusters, sequels to the Avengers films, to be released in 2018 and 2019, respectively.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-emphasis-key=\"paragraphBiaFot\" data-emphasis-ord=\"2\">By 2019, if all goes according to reported plan, \u201cMarvel Studios will have released 23 separate films that fall within the (Marvel Cinematic Universe),\u201d according to the story. Four of those \u2014 The Winter Soldier, Civil War, and Avengers: Infinity War parts 1 and 2 \u2014 will be directed by Joe and Anthony Russo, who are 45 and 46, respectively.<\/p>\n<p data-emphasis-key=\"paragraphTnaTna\" data-emphasis-ord=\"3\">They\u2019re now a long way from Cleveland and Case Western Reserve University, where they attended graduate school \u201cway back in the go-go indie \u201990s, the brothers decided they wanted to make films.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-emphasis-key=\"paragraphFtsFts\" data-emphasis-ord=\"4\">From the story:<\/p>\n<p data-emphasis-key=\"paragraphTsaAao\" data-emphasis-ord=\"5\"><em>They self-financed a tiny crime caper called Pieces for $35,000, which got them discovered by Steven Soderbergh at the Slamdance Film Festival in 1997, which is about the most \u201990s-filmmaker origin story imaginable. Soderbergh recognized an affinity in their movie \u2014 which Joe describes now as \u201ca very self-aware, ironic, nonlinear, arty, you know, kind of up-its-own-ass film\u201d \u2014 to his own Slamdance entry, the nonnarrative experimental film \u201cSchizopolis.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Soderbergh then produced their first studio comedy, (the Cleveland-filmed) \u201cWelcome to Collinwood,\u201d in 2002, and they followed that with \u201cYou, Me and Dupree,\u201d an Owen Wilson vehicle, in 2006. They also became in-demand TV sitcom directors, thanks to an Emmy win in 2004 for directing \u201cArrested Development.\u201d None of which would seem like a logical r\u00e9sum\u00e9 entry for a pair of directors now entrusted with the future of the most successful franchise in Hollywood.
