The doomed love story of addicts Jim and Caroline,\u00a0<em>Berlin<\/em>&#8216;s 10 songs cycle through the couple&#8217;s initial drug-euphoric enchantment, their violent betrayals, their fatal collapse. <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/85.17.151.77\/217200001-217250000\/217202601-217202700\/217202671_5_6OEg.jpeg\" align=\"right\" height=\"333\" width=\"244\" hspace=\"15\" border=\"0\" \/>But when the album first came out in 1973, as the startlingly somber follow-up to Reed&#8217;s Bowie-produced glam-rock triumph\u00a0<em>Transformer<\/em>\u00a0(&#8220;Walk on the Wild Side&#8221;),\u00a0<em>Berlin<\/em>\u00a0was largely dismissed as a creative and commercial flop, an indulgent fallout from Reed&#8217;s messy first divorce.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #444444; font-family: Verdana; font-size: 12px; line-height: 18px\" class=\"Apple-style-span\">Things change: 30 years later, pieces of the Berlin Wall are for sale on the Internet, and Lou&#8217;s German-junkie ode has been recast as a masterpiece. Reed had never performed\u00a0<em>Berlin<\/em>\u00a0live in full until 2006, with a landmark five-day stretch at St. Ann&#8217;s Warehouse in Brooklyn. Director\/artist Julian Schnabel brought cameras to commit the performance to celluloid; the record&#8217;s original producer, Bob Ezrin, was enlisted to oversee.
