Legendary tennis commentator Bud Collins dies at 86<\/h1>\n

Bud Collins, a passionate\u00a0advocate for tennis whose relationship with the sport began more than a half-century ago,\u00a0died Friday in his home in Brookline, Mass., according to the Boston Globe<\/a>. Collins was 86.<\/p>\n

Collins was an influential tennis writer and historian\u00a0and\u00a0revolutionized sports journalism when he began to offer commentary on camera in the early 1960s. Despite his failing health,\u00a0Collins traveled last September to New York for the U.S. Open, where the media center was dedicated and named in his honor.<\/p>\n

Born Arthur Worth Collins, he was simply known as \u201cBud\u201d to those in the tennis community and his TV audience. A native of\u00a0Berea, Ohio, Collins\u2019s first love was baseball and the newspaper business. He didn\u2019t know much about tennis growing up, but\u00a0began covering the sport\u00a0for the Boston Herald in the late 1950s, starting at the Massachusetts Women\u2019s Championship at\u00a0Longwood Cricket Club. It was then that Collins acquired a true appreciation for the sport.<\/p>\n
