Hennigan<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"trb_embed_imageContainer_img\" title=\"Barriss\" src=\"http:\/\/www.trbimg.com\/img-563bf2f6\/turbine\/la-la-me-barris-ew-la0007249127-20121129\/750\/750x422\" alt=\"Barriss\" width=\"480\" height=\"auto\" \/><em>(Al Seib \/ Los Angeles Times)<\/em><\/p>\n<p>In 1965, producers of the \u201cBatman\u201d television show needed a supercar that Adam West could wield to battle the Joker and the Riddler.<\/p>\n<p>There was just one man for the job: George Barris.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI saw the script and it said, &#8216;Bang,&#8217; &#8216;Pow,&#8217; &#8216;Boom,&#8217; \u201d Barris told The Times in 2012. \u201cThat&#8217;s exactly what I wanted the car to be able to do. I wanted it to be as big a character as the actors themselves.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It took 15 days and $15,000 for Barris to transform a 1955 Ford Lincoln Futura into the iconic midnight black and fluorescent-red-pinstriped Batmobile with plexiglass bubble windshields \u2014 \u201cbulletproof,\u201d of course. He didn\u2019t forget the Bat Ray, with its dual 450-watt laser beams for obliterating obstacles, the Bat-O-Meter for identifying the bad guys, or the oil squirters for repelling evildoers.<\/p>\n<p>Barris, the Southern California custom-car legend who created many of the most memorable and outrageous automobiles ever seen on film and television, died Thursday at his home in Encino. He was 89.<\/p>\n<p>A man nearly as flamboyant as his cars, Barris also designed special vehicles for many of the biggest names in Hollywood, including Frank Sinatra, Sammy Davis Jr., Elvis Presley,\u00a0<a title=\"Michael Jackson\" href=\"http:\/\/www.latimes.com\/topic\/entertainment\/music\/michael-jackson-PECLB002548-topic.html\" target=\"_blank\">Michael Jackson<\/a>\u00a0and John Wayne.<\/p>\n<p>For his everyday use he drove a Toyota Prius that was tricked out in true Barris fashion \u2014 sprayed gold with emerald green metallic accents and doors that opened upward, like a Lamborghini.<\/p>\n<p>[ <a href=\"http:\/\/www.latimes.com\/local\/obituaries\/la-me-george-barris-batmobile-dies-at-89-20151105-story.html\" target=\"_blank\">click to read full obit\u00a0at The LA Times<\/a> ]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>from The Los Angeles Times George Barris, creator of the Batmobile, dies at 89 By\u00a0Elaine Woo\u00a0and\u00a0W.J.
