{"id":6923,"date":"2015-10-28T07:59:23","date_gmt":"2015-10-28T14:59:23","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/BigJimIndustries.com\/wordpress\/?p=6923"},"modified":"2023-01-27T14:54:16","modified_gmt":"2023-01-27T21:54:16","slug":"starry-night-in-agar","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/bigjimindustries.com\/wordpress\/2015\/10\/28\/starry-night-in-agar\/","title":{"rendered":"Starry Night in Agar"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/news\/nation-now\/2015\/10\/21\/starry-night-bacteria-petri-dish-van-gogh\/74326210\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">from USA Today<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n<h1>Van Gogh&#8217;s &#8216;Starry Night&#8217; recreated with bacteria in petri dish<\/h1>\n<p>by\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/staff\/7781\/mary-bowerman\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"author noopener\">Mary Bowerman<\/a><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/www.gannett-cdn.com\/-mm-\/d206d7dc2d214bf5a65d2d605cee210e2b9a9c4f\/c=4-0-3260-2448&amp;r=x404&amp;c=534x401\/local\/-\/media\/2015\/10\/21\/USATODAY\/USATODAY\/635810231881187730-Vincent-van-Goghs-The-Starry-Night.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"480\" height=\"auto\" \/><em>(Photo: American Society for Microbiology)<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Bacteria\u00a0may not be the tool of choice for most artists, but for microbiologists getting in touch with their creative side, it&#8217;s just as good as paint.<\/p>\n<p>Microbiologists, members of the American Society of Microbiology, and a few citizen scientists were recently challenged to use microbes to create works of art\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.microbeworld.org\/backend-submitted-news\/1998\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">as part of the American Society for Microbiology&#8217;s first Agar Art contest.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>As a\u00a0canvas,\u00a0each artist\u00a0used a petri dish filled with agar, a jelly type substance where bacteria live and grow.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The artist picked the bacteria they wanted to use based on the different color expressed when that strain of bacteria grows,&#8221; Emily Dilger, public outreach manager for\u00a0American Society for Microbiology, told USA TODAY Network.<\/p>\n<p>The winners of the contest were announced in September and\u00a0works of art included representations of Vincent Van Gogh&#8217;s &#8220;Starry Night,&#8221; as well as numerous originals.
