SLOTNIK<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"media-viewer-candidate\" src=\"http:\/\/static01.nyt.com\/images\/2015\/09\/02\/arts\/02davis-2-obit\/02davis-2-obit-master675-v2.jpg\" width=480 height=auto \/><em>Noah Davis, in an undated photo, founded the Underground Museum in Los Angeles.<\/span> <span class=\"credit\"> <span class=\"visually-hidden\">Credit<\/span> Ed Templeton <\/span> <\/em><\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Link to his Instagram account\" href=\"https:\/\/instagram.com\/explore\/tags\/noahdavis\/\" target=\"_blank\">Noah Davis<\/a>, a painter and installation artist who founded the <a title=\"The Underground Museum\u2019s homepage\" href=\"http:\/\/theunderground-museum.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Underground Museum<\/a>, an exhibition space in a working-class neighborhood of Los Angeles that provides free art shows, died on Saturday at his home in Ojai, Calif. He was 32.<\/p>\n<p>He learned he had cancer a few years ago, his family said in confirming the death.<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Davis\u2019s paintings were mostly figurative works depicting blacks in surreal landscapes, sometimes with their features distorted or smeared in a manner reminiscent of Francis Bacon. He drew inspiration from sources as varied as Richard Brautigan\u2019s 1968 novella \u201cIn Watermelon Sugar\u201d and \u201cThe Jerry Springer Show.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe palette is very moody and evocative, and he has an extraordinary ability to convey emotional effect,\u201d Helen Molesworth, the chief curator of the <a title=\"Link to MoCA\u2019s homepage\" href=\"http:\/\/www.moca.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">Museum of Contemporary Art in <\/a> Los Angeles, said by telephone Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Davis founded the Underground Museum with his wife, the artist Karon Davis, in 2012 (they had married in 2008) in a row of storefronts in the Arlington Heights neighborhood of Los Angeles. Mr. Davis organized eclectic shows there like \u201c<a title=\"Link to photos from The Oracle\" href=\"http:\/\/theunderground-museum.com\/the-oracle\" target=\"_blank\">The Oracle<\/a>,\u201d which combined sculptures by Henry Taylor, 19th-century carvings from Sudan and a video installation by his brother, the video artist Kahlil Joseph.
