Sixteen years after SpongeBob SquarePants first appeared on television, the yellow animated character made a splash on the big screen this weekend with the release of “The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water.”<\/p>\n

The film opened to an estimated $56-million gross in the U.S. and Canada over the weekend, exceeding\u00a0tracking projections<\/a>\u00a0and pushing “American Sniper” out of the top spot after its\u00a0three-week reign<\/a>\u00a0there.<\/p>\n
