Torrey McClain<\/h4>\n<p>&#8211; I may have missed the \u201cSaga\u201d panel at 1 pm, but I caught Brian K. Vaughn and Fiona Staples during the \u201cStrong Female Characters\u201d panel two hours later in the same room.\u00a0 June Brigman, Colleen Coover, Sara Mayhew, Jimmy Palmiotti, Amanda Conner, Paul Tobin, Vaughn and Staples talked about what it takes to make strong female characters, how they approach it and listed some of their current favorites.\u00a0 The story that will last with me though came from the moderator, Maggie Thompson.\u00a0 She told the story of her husband reading to their daughter a run of \u201cFantastic Four\u201d every night before bed. \u00a0As a gift for their daughter when she was away in college they gave her a bound collection of a great many of those same stories.\u00a0 When she received them and started to read the stories, she angrily called her mom and yelled that these were not the stories her father had read to her. \u00a0It turns out that her father had read her all of Reed Richard\u2019s lines as the words said by Sue Storm.\u00a0 He didn\u2019t want the only female superhero in the story to be the one that fades and hides.<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; I returned to Donovan\u2019s in San Diego to visit some friends and once again got to enjoy some of their fine food.\u00a0 I had the three sliders and after a lunch of only a Snickers bar in between panels (but I\u2019ll have you know, it truly satisfied \u2013 now Mars, please send me a free box), those burgers hit the spot.<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; I paid my respects in person to the player and the man of San Diego baseball, Tony Gwynn.<\/p>\n<p>[ <a href=\"http:\/\/borg.com\/2014\/07\/28\/saturday-at-comic-con-the-great-the-new-and-the-tasty\/#more-20711\" target=\"_blank\">click to read full post at borg.com<\/a> ]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>from borg.com Saturday at Comic-Con \u2013 The Great, The New and The\u00a0Tasty WELCOME TO EARTH-4 A Weekly Column with\u00a0J.
