Research suggests they may\u00a0have permanent, positive effects on the human brain.<\/p>\n<p>In fact, a\u00a0<a style=\"color: #2e6d9d;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/news\/to-your-health\/wp\/2014\/07\/03\/psychedelic-drugs-put-your-brain-in-a-waking-dream-study-finds\/Psilocybin\" target=\"_blank\">mind-altering compound<\/a>\u00a0found in some 200 species of mushroom is\u00a0<a style=\"color: #2e6d9d;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2010\/04\/12\/science\/12psychedelics.html\" target=\"_blank\">already being explored<\/a>\u00a0as a potential treatment for depression and anxiety. People who consume these mushrooms, after \u201ctrips\u201d that can be a bit scary and unpleasant, report feeling more optimistic, less self-centered, and even happier for months after the fact.<\/p>\n<p>But why do these trips change the way people see the world? According to a study published today in\u00a0<a style=\"color: #2e6d9d;\" href=\"http:\/\/onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/journal\/10.1002\/(ISSN)1097-0193\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Human Brain Mapping<\/em><\/a>, the mushroom compounds\u00a0could be unlocking brain states usually only experienced when we dream, changes in activity that could help unlock permanent shifts in perspective.<\/p>\n<p><a style=\"color: #2e6d9d;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.eurekalert.org\/emb_releases\/2014-07\/icl-nsd070114.php\" target=\"_blank\">The study examined<\/a>\u00a0brain activity in those who\u2019d received injections of\u00a0<a style=\"color: #2e6d9d;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/news\/to-your-health\/wp\/2014\/07\/03\/psychedelic-drugs-put-your-brain-in-a-waking-dream-study-finds\/Psilocybin\" target=\"_blank\">psilocybin<\/a>, which gives \u201cshrooms\u201d their psychedelic punch.
