Over 60 Artworks Trashed at Kunstakademie D\u00fcsseldorf<\/h1>\n

A disgruntled janitor or group of janitors at the renowned\u00a0Kunstakademie D\u00fcsseldorf<\/a>\u00a0(D\u00fcsseldorf Academy of Art) has destroyed over 60 artworks, the\u00a0Rheinische Post<\/span>\u00a0<\/a>(RP) reports. Mostly canvases, many of the pieces were slashed with a knife and stomped on to break their stretchers. They were then thrown in a dumpster in the academy\u2019s courtyard.<\/p>\n

Understandably, the students whose work was trashed are outraged. \u201cThe whole situation is extremely emotional,\u201d their chosen representative, Sabrina Straub, told the\u00a0RP<\/span>. Many of the works that were destroyed had not yet been assessed by the students\u2019 professors. Others were to be sold.<\/p>\n

Considering the consistently illustrious careers of the academy\u2019s alumni\u2014among them some of\u00a0Germany\u2019s most expensive<\/a>, such as\u00a0Gerhard Richter<\/a>,\u00a0Joseph Beuys<\/a>,\u00a0Sigmar Polke<\/a>, G\u00fcnther Uecker, and Thomas Sch\u00fctte, as well as recent star David Ostrowski\u2014the long-term economic impact of the destruction could be in the millions. (For the perpetrator\u2019s sake, we hope none of\u00a0current-professor Peter Doig\u2019s<\/a>\u00a0works happened to fall into the fray.)<\/p>\n

The Kunstakademie D\u00fcsseldorf\u2019s director, Rita McBride, was similarly floored by the incident. \u201cIt\u2019s just terrible for the students,\u201d she told the paper. \u201cThe works are irreplaceable.\u201d However, in a letter to the academy\u2019s student body the administration\u2019s contrition was more measured. It read, \u201cRelevant members of the janitorial staff have been spoken to about their flawed approach,\u201d in this matter.<\/p>\n
