Islanders from Lesbos sue gay group over use of term ‘Lesbian’<\/h1>\n

ATHENS<\/a>,\u00a0Greece<\/a>\u00a0– Three islanders from Lesbos told a court Tuesday that gay women insult their home’s identity by calling themselves lesbians.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

The plaintiffs \u2014 two women and a man \u2014 are seeking to ban a Greek gay rights group from using the word “lesbian” in its name.<\/p>\n

Also known as Mytilini, Lesbos was the home of the ancient poet\u00a0Sappho<\/a>, who praised love among women. It is a major travel destination for gay women.<\/p>\n

The Homosexual and Lesbian Community of Greece “causes confusion by using a geographic term in connection with (the group’s) special character and social action,” said\u00a0Dimitris Papadelis<\/a>, a lawyer representing the plaintiffs.<\/p>\n

A spokeswoman for the group accused the plaintiffs of homophobia.<\/p>\n

“I believe … the other party’s intentions were purely racist,”\u00a0Evangelia Vlami<\/a>\u00a0said. “They showed that what bothers them is a specific sexual orientation.”<\/p>\n

“What will they do next, sue the\u00a0United Nations<\/a>? They, too, use the term lesbian,” Vlami said.<\/p>\n

Plaintiff Dimitris Lambrou has insisted the lawsuit “is not an aggressive act against gay women.”<\/p>\n

Lawyers from both sides are to submit written arguments on Wednesday, and the court is expected to issue its decision in the next six months.<\/span><\/p>\n
