(Courtesy Bill Troop)<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Rene Ricard, the Massachussets-born artist and poet who was a fixture of New York\u2019s art world since he arrived in 1965, has died. He passed away early this morning in Bellevue Hospital, said the artist Brice Marden, who had known Ricard since the 1960s. He died of cancer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is an irreplaceable person,\u201d Mr. Marden told\u00a0<em>The Observer<\/em>. \u201cHe was really something, just on all ends of the spectrum.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A\u00a0member of Andy Warhol\u2019s Factory, Ricard appeared in iconic films, including<em>Kitchen<\/em>\u00a0(1965) and\u00a0<em>Chelsea Girls<\/em>\u00a0(1966), and even played Warhol in\u00a0<em>The Andy Warhol Story<\/em>\u00a0(1967) alongside Edie Sedgwick. He is perhaps best remembered for his influential essay \u201cThe Radiant Child,\u201d which appeared in\u00a0<em>Artforum<\/em>\u00a0in 1981 and\u00a0effectively launched the\u00a0careers of painters Jean-Michel Basquiat and Keith Haring, and for his collections of poetry. The Tiffany-turquoise volume\u00a0<em>Rene Ricard 1979-1980\u00a0<\/em>was\u00a0the\u00a0Dia Art Foundation\u2019s debut publication.
