Later, arguments were made for the keyboardist Billy Preston or Yoko Ono. A new\u00a0<a title=\"more on the book\" href=\"http:\/\/thefifthbeatle.com\/graphic-novel\/\" target=\"_blank\">graphic novel<\/a>\u00a0bestows the honorific on the band\u2019s manager Brian Epstein. However, the\u00a0<a title=\"More articles about The Beatles\" href=\"http:\/\/topics.nytimes.com\/top\/reference\/timestopics\/organizations\/b\/beatles_the\/index.html?inline=nyt-org\" target=\"_blank\">Beatles<\/a>\u2019 most essential partners may be their fictional counterparts: the Rutles, stars of the mockumentary \u201cAll You Need Is Cash.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Rutles were a hapless but well-meaning band created as both tribute and goof by Eric Idle (of Monty Python fame) when he was appearing on the BBC sketch show \u201cRutland Weekend Television\u201d in the mid-\u201970s. The group was given musical voice by Neil Innes (a Python collaborator and member of the comedy rock group Bonzo Dog Doo-Dah Band). The Rutles were conceived and still exist as inhabitants of a kind of meta-universe where there were no Beatles, no era-defining hits like \u201cPenny Lane,\u201d but rather a carefully created near-sound-alike titled \u201cDoubleback Alley,\u201d and no real revolution.<\/p>\n<p>Each time there\u2019s a swell of Beatlemania and a flood of product, the \u201cPrefab Four\u201d have been there to keep the Fab Four\u2019s myth in check.
