The art market entered uncharted territory tonight at Christie\u2019s Rockefeller Center headquarters, where auctioneer Jussi Pylkk\u00e4nen sold Francis Bacon\u2019s 1969 triptych\u00a0Three Studies of Lucian Freud<\/em>\u00a0for $142.4 million, an all-time record for a work of art at auction,\u00a0easily beating the $119.9 million paid for a pastel of Edvard Munch\u2019s\u00a0The Scream<\/em><\/a>\u00a0at Sotheby\u2019s New York in May 2012. (Accounting for inflation,\u00a0you can argue that figure<\/a>, but in raw dollars, Bacon\u2019s now the record holder.)<\/p>\n

\u201cLet\u2019s start this at, oh, eight\u2014ty million,\u201d Mr. Pylkk\u00e4nen said wryly from his podium, announcing the lot. And then they were off to the races. Bidding in the room climbed up to $100 million before it turned to a battle of telephone bidders, one eventually grabbing it for a $127 million hammer price. (The remaining $15 million and change is the buyer\u2019s premium.) It took only six minutes.<\/p>\n
