It meant you were a pansy.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-top: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-bottom: 8px; margin: 0px\">Fast-forward thirtysomething years and it&#8217;s another story.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-top: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-bottom: 8px; margin: 0px\">As Stew observes, &#8220;If you walk into the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nydailynews.com\/topics\/Foot+Locker+Inc.\" target=\"_blank\" style=\"color: #015fb6; text-decoration: none; padding: 0px; margin: 0px\" title=\"Foot Locker Inc.\">Foot Locker<\/a>\u00a0on\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nydailynews.com\/topics\/Times+Square\" target=\"_blank\" style=\"color: #015fb6; text-decoration: none; padding: 0px; margin: 0px\" title=\"Times Square\">Times Square<\/a>, every kid working there is black, Puerto Rican or Dominican. And when rock videos come on the screen, those kids rock out just as hard to emo bands as to rap. To them, it&#8217;s all the same.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-top: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-bottom: 8px; margin: 0px\">He&#8217;s not the only one who has observed the change.\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nydailynews.com\/topics\/Earl+Douglass\" target=\"_blank\" style=\"color: #015fb6; text-decoration: none; padding: 0px; margin: 0px\" title=\"Earl Douglass\">Earl Douglass<\/a>, executive director of the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nydailynews.com\/topics\/Black+Rock+Coalition\" target=\"_blank\" style=\"color: #015fb6; text-decoration: none; padding: 0px; margin: 0px\" title=\"Black Rock Coalition\">Black Rock Coalition<\/a>, says that growing up in the &#8217;80s as a black kid listening to the Stones was &#8220;excruciatingly alienating. My friends, who listened to hip hop, didn&#8217;t understand or didn&#8217;t want to understand,&#8221; he says. &#8220;Now, a lot of those walls are being torn down. Black kids listen to everything.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.nydailynews.com\/img\/2008\/05\/24\/amd_rock_gnarls_barkley.jpg\" alt=\"Acts like Gnarls Barkley are breaking down the old boundaries between musical genres and race.\" border=\"0\" hspace=\"15\" align=\"left\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-top: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-bottom: 8px; margin: 0px\">For proof, look to a whole wave of cool and respected modern rock acts who just happen to be led by, or entirely composed of, African-Americans. They include\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nydailynews.com\/topics\/Gnarls+Barkley\" target=\"_blank\" style=\"color: #015fb6; text-decoration: none; padding: 0px; margin: 0px\" title=\"Gnarls Barkley\">Gnarls Barkley<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nydailynews.com\/topics\/TV+on+the+Radio\" target=\"_blank\" style=\"color: #015fb6; text-decoration: none; padding: 0px; margin: 0px\" title=\"TV on the Radio\">TV on the Radio<\/a>, N.E.R.D.,<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nydailynews.com\/topics\/Saul+Williams\" target=\"_blank\" style=\"color: #015fb6; text-decoration: none; padding: 0px; margin: 0px\" title=\"Saul Williams\">Saul Williams<\/a>\u00a0and Lightspeed Champion, all of whom are so well-integrated into music&#8217;s hot set that their race is rarely mentioned.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-top: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-bottom: 8px; margin: 0px\">At the same time, we&#8217;re seeing emerging artists like\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nydailynews.com\/topics\/Danielia+Cotton\" target=\"_blank\" style=\"color: #015fb6; text-decoration: none; padding: 0px; margin: 0px\" title=\"Danielia Cotton\">Danielia Cotton<\/a>(a black singer who performs straight-on classic rock) and a Tony-nominated Broadway musical, &#8220;Passing Strange,&#8221; which deals specifically with the emotional issues of growing up as a black rock fan.
