Eli Broad might need to OK any merger.<\/h2>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"border: 0px;\" title=\"Eli Broad\" alt=\"Eli Broad\" src=\"http:\/\/www.trbimg.com\/img-51394495\/turbine\/la-1164010-et-0108-eli-broad-15-als-jpg-20130307\/600\" width=\"480\" height=\"auto\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p><em>Eli Broad, who is building a museum across from MOCA, agreed in 2008 to give the downtown Los Angeles institution a bailout valued at up to $30 million.\u00a0(Al Seib \/ Los Angeles Times\u00a0\/\u00a0January\u00a08, 2013)<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>By Jori Finkel and Mike Boehm, Los Angeles Times<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0<a id=\"ORCUL00073\" title=\"Los Angeles County Museum of Art\" href=\"http:\/\/www.latimes.com\/topic\/arts-culture\/museums\/los-angeles-county-museum-of-art-ORCUL00073.topic\" target=\"_blank\">Los Angeles County Museum of Art<\/a>\u00a0has proposed acquiring the troubled Museum of Contemporary Art \u2014 a move that would combine the biggest art collection west of the Mississippi with one of the world&#8217;s most prestigious troves of contemporary art.<\/p>\n<p>The acquisition could put to rest long-standing concerns over the financial viability of the Museum of Contemporary Art, or MOCA. But it also faces potential opposition from the region&#8217;s most influential art patron, billionaire\u00a0<a id=\"PEBSL014823\" title=\"Eli Broad\" href=\"http:\/\/www.latimes.com\/topic\/economy-business-finance\/eli-broad-PEBSL014823.topic\" target=\"_blank\">Eli Broad<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In funding a 2008 MOCA bailout valued at up to $30 million, Broad won a stipulation that MOCA could not be acquired for 10 years by &#8220;any museum located within 100 miles of MOCA&#8217;s Grand Avenue facility,&#8221; excluding &#8220;educational institutions or museums affiliated with educational institutions.&#8221; Broad declined immediate comment Thursday.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.latimes.com\/entertainment\/arts\/culture\/la-et-cm-times-arts-culture-2012-pictures,0,2715761.photogallery\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>PHOTOS: Arts and culture in pictures by The Times<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The acquisition offer was made in a letter from the leaders of the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, or LACMA, to the co-chairs of the MOCA board.<\/p>\n<p>[ <a href=\"http:\/\/www.latimes.com\/entertainment\/arts\/culture\/la-et-cm-museum-bid-20130308,0,7396426,full.story\" target=\"_blank\">click to continue reading at the LAT<\/a> ]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>from The LA Times Art marriage may yield L.A. mega-museum LACMA makes a preliminary offer for taking over MOCA.
