Word is they want your job, your life and probably your little dog, too.<\/p>\n<p itemprop=\"articleBody\">Robots have once again gripped the nation\u2019s imagination, stoking fears of displaced jobs and perhaps even a displaced human race. An\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/video\/watch\/?id=50138922n\" target=\"_blank\">alarmist segment on \u201c60 Minutes<\/a>\u201d was only the most vivid of a recent series of pieces in\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.wired.com\/gadgetlab\/2012\/12\/ff-robots-will-take-our-jobs\/all\/\" target=\"_blank\">respected<\/a>\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.economist.com\/news\/special-report\/21569573-attractions-employing-robots-rise-software-machines\" target=\"_blank\">magazines<\/a>\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/news.discovery.com\/videos\/the-robot-takeover-is-coming.htm\" target=\"_blank\">and<\/a>\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/news.yahoo.com\/practically-human-smart-machines-job-052642993--finance.html\" target=\"_blank\">news<\/a>\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.thefiscaltimes.com\/Articles\/2013\/01\/18\/Why-Robots-Are-Worse-for-the-Economy-Than-You-Think.aspx\" target=\"_blank\">outlets<\/a>\u00a0warning about widespread worker displacement. Professors at Cambridge University and a co-founder of Skype are\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/opinionator.blogs.nytimes.com\/2013\/01\/27\/cambridge-cabs-and-copenhagen-my-route-to-existential-risk\/\" target=\"_blank\">creating<\/a>\u00a0a new\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/cser.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">Center for the Study of Existential Risk<\/a>, which would research a \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Terminator_%28franchise%29\" target=\"_blank\">Terminator<\/a>\u201d-like scenario in which supercomputers rise up and destroy their human overlords, presumably plotting the whole caper in zeros and ones.<\/p>\n<p itemprop=\"articleBody\">In New York alone,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/theater.nytimes.com\/2013\/01\/28\/theater\/reviews\/the-truth-quotient-at-the-beckett-theater.html?ref=theater\" target=\"_blank\">there<\/a>\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.japansociety.org\/event\/seinendan-theater-company-osaka-university-robot-theater-project-sayonara-i-worker\" target=\"_blank\">are<\/a>\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/theater.nytimes.com\/show\/84734\/R-U-R-\/overview\" target=\"_blank\">four<\/a>\u00a0plays running this month with themes of cybernetics run amok. One is a\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.resonanceensemble.org\/season.htm\" target=\"_blank\">revival<\/a>\u00a0of \u201cR.U.R.,\u201d a 1920 Czech play that was the granddaddy of the cybernetic revolt genre and that originated the current meaning of the word \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.oed.com\/view\/Entry\/166641?rskey=WiyZ1D&amp;result=2&amp;isAdvanced=false\" target=\"_blank\">robot<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p itemprop=\"articleBody\">Such android anxiety has a long history. John Maynard Keynes\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.econ.yale.edu\/smith\/econ116a\/keynes1.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">wrote<\/a>\u00a0about \u201ctechnological unemployment\u201d during the Great Depression. In the Industrial Revolution, disgruntled laborers \u2014 including the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nationalarchives.gov.uk\/education\/politics\/g3\/\" target=\"_blank\">original Luddites<\/a>\u00a0\u2014 smashed automated looms and threshing machines that \u201cstole\u201d their jobs.
