Raging (Again) Against the Robots<\/h1>\n

THE robots are coming! Word is they want your job, your life and probably your little dog, too.<\/p>\n

Robots have once again gripped the nation\u2019s imagination, stoking fears of displaced jobs and perhaps even a displaced human race. An\u00a0alarmist segment on \u201c60 Minutes<\/a>\u201d was only the most vivid of a recent series of pieces in\u00a0respected<\/a>\u00a0magazines<\/a>\u00a0and<\/a>\u00a0news<\/a>\u00a0outlets<\/a>\u00a0warning about widespread worker displacement. Professors at Cambridge University and a co-founder of Skype are\u00a0creating<\/a>\u00a0a new\u00a0Center for the Study of Existential Risk<\/a>, which would research a \u201cTerminator<\/a>\u201d-like scenario in which supercomputers rise up and destroy their human overlords, presumably plotting the whole caper in zeros and ones.<\/p>\n

In New York alone,\u00a0there<\/a>\u00a0are<\/a>\u00a0four<\/a>\u00a0plays running this month with themes of cybernetics run amok. One is a\u00a0revival<\/a>\u00a0of \u201cR.U.R.,\u201d a 1920 Czech play that was the granddaddy of the cybernetic revolt genre and that originated the current meaning of the word \u201crobot<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n

Such android anxiety has a long history. John Maynard Keynes\u00a0wrote<\/a>\u00a0about \u201ctechnological unemployment\u201d during the Great Depression. In the Industrial Revolution, disgruntled laborers \u2014 including the\u00a0original Luddites<\/a>\u00a0\u2014 smashed automated looms and threshing machines that \u201cstole\u201d their jobs. In the 15th century, scribes protested the printing press, with a futile zeal rivaled perhaps only by that of modern journalists.<\/p>\n
