Samurai movies had an influence on American westerns,&#8221; he says.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-top: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-bottom: 10px; margin: 0px\">But to make the film, he drew upon his love of film noir, and points to three specific fight scenes that were models for what he hoped to accomplish in &#8220;Redbelt&#8221;:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-top: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-bottom: 10px; margin: 0px\">&#8220;White Heat&#8221; (1949): The famous\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nydailynews.com\/topics\/James+Cagney\" target=\"_blank\" style=\"color: #015fb6; text-decoration: none; padding: 0px; margin: 0px\" title=\"James Cagney\">Jimmy Cagney<\/a>\u00a0film (&#8220;Top o&#8217; the world, Ma!&#8221;) cast Cagney is crazed killer\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nydailynews.com\/topics\/Cody+Jarrett\" target=\"_blank\" style=\"color: #015fb6; text-decoration: none; padding: 0px; margin: 0px\" title=\"Cody Jarrett\">Cody Jarrett<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nydailynews.com\/topics\/Edmond+O'Brien\" target=\"_blank\" style=\"color: #015fb6; text-decoration: none; padding: 0px; margin: 0px\" title=\"Edmond O'Brien\">Edmond O&#8217;Brien<\/a>\u00a0as the lawman sent undercover to infiltrate Jarrett&#8217;s gang in prison. &#8220;There&#8217;s a pretty good fight in &#8216;White Heat&#8217; between Edmond O&#8217;Brien and Jimmy Cagney,&#8221; Mamet says. &#8220;And O&#8217;Brien is ganged up on by some of Jimmy Cagney&#8217;s thugs. He uses a little bit of judo \u2013 he applies a cross-collar choke that&#8217;s pretty accurate.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-top: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-bottom: 10px; margin: 0px\">&#8220;Night and the City&#8221; (1950): In\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nydailynews.com\/topics\/Jules+Dassin\" target=\"_blank\" style=\"color: #015fb6; text-decoration: none; padding: 0px; margin: 0px\" title=\"Jules Dassin\">Jules Dassin<\/a>&#8216;s film, the late\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nydailynews.com\/topics\/Richard+Widmark\" target=\"_blank\" style=\"color: #015fb6; text-decoration: none; padding: 0px; margin: 0px\" title=\"Richard Widmark\">Richard Widmark<\/a>\u00a0played an American small-timer on the hustle in\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nydailynews.com\/topics\/London\" target=\"_blank\" style=\"color: #015fb6; text-decoration: none; padding: 0px; margin: 0px\" title=\"London\">London<\/a>, who puts together a wrestling match between a popular wrestler known as the Strangler (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nydailynews.com\/topics\/Mike+Mazurki\" target=\"_blank\" style=\"color: #015fb6; text-decoration: none; padding: 0px; margin: 0px\" title=\"Mike Mazurki\">Mike Mazurki<\/a>) and an aging wrestling champion known as Gregorius: &#8220;Jules Dassin had seen\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nydailynews.com\/topics\/Stanislaus+Zbyszko\" target=\"_blank\" style=\"color: #015fb6; text-decoration: none; padding: 0px; margin: 0px\" title=\"Stanislaus Zbyszko\">Stanislaus Zbyszko<\/a>\u00a0wrestle as a young man and said he wanted someone like him for Gregorius,&#8221; Mamet says. &#8220;They said, &#8216;Why not get Zbyszko?&#8217; Zbyszko was in his 70s \u2013 but he played the part. He beats Mazurki in the film \u2013 and then dies after the match.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-top: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-bottom: 10px; margin: 0px\">&#8220;Bad Day at Black Rock&#8221; (1955): In\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nydailynews.com\/topics\/Raoul+Walsh\" target=\"_blank\" style=\"color: #015fb6; text-decoration: none; padding: 0px; margin: 0px\" title=\"Raoul Walsh\">Raoul Walsh<\/a>&#8216;s progressive drama,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nydailynews.com\/topics\/Spencer+Tracy\" target=\"_blank\" style=\"color: #015fb6; text-decoration: none; padding: 0px; margin: 0px\" title=\"Spencer Tracy\">Spencer Tracy<\/a>\u00a0played a one-armed veteran who goes to the tiny town of Black Rock in 1945 to present a posthumous medal to the father of a Japanese-American soldier who has been killed in combat. But he runs into nothing but hostility in the town because he is on the verge of uncovering its dark secret. &#8220;I love the fight scene in that film,&#8221; Mamet says. &#8220;Spencer Tracy fights with one arm.
