Rees Shapiro<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.geekalerts.com\/darth-vader-cookie-jar\/\" title=\"Limited Edition Darth Vader Cookie Jar (from GeekAlerts.com)\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.geekalerts.com\/u\/darth-vader-cookie-jar.jpg\" height=\"400\" width=\"400\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Ralph McQuarrie, an artist whose paintings of a gold-plated robot in an otherworldly desert and an intergalactic sword duel between a scraggly youth and a black-masked villain helped persuade film executives to gamble on a young director named George Lucas and his visionary story, \u201cStar Wars,\u201d died March 3 at his home in Berkeley, Calif. He was 82.<\/p>\n<p>He had complications from Parkinson\u2019s disease, said John Scoleri, co-author of a book of Mr. McQuarrie\u2019s art.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRalph McQuarrie was the first person I hired to help me envision \u2018Star Wars,\u2019\u200a\u201d Lucas said in a statement posted online. \u201cWhen words could not convey my ideas, I could always point to one of Ralph\u2019s fabulous illustrations and say, \u2018Do it like this.\u2019\u200a\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mr. McQuarrie, for instance, designed the Samurai-inspired helmet and black caped-outfit worn by arch nemesis Darth Vader.
