He rebuilt the company after 600 of his employees lost their lives.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p>On the night of Sept. 11, 2001,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nydailynews.com\/topics\/Howard+Lutnick\" target=\"_blank\">Cantor Fitzgerald CEO Howard Lutnick<\/a>\u00a0picked up the phone in his\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nydailynews.com\/topics\/Manhattan\" target=\"_blank\">Manhattan<\/a>\u00a0apartment and dialed into a conference call.<br style=\"padding: 0px; margin: 0px\" \/><br style=\"padding: 0px; margin: 0px\" \/>Lutnick\u2019s brother, best friend and 656 other colleagues were dead. His firm, 960 people strong a day earlier, was decimated.<br style=\"padding: 0px; margin: 0px\" \/><br style=\"padding: 0px; margin: 0px\" \/>On the other end of the line were some of the surviving Cantor employees.<br style=\"padding: 0px; margin: 0px\" \/><br style=\"padding: 0px; margin: 0px\" \/>\u201cWe have two choices,\u201d Lutnick told them.<br style=\"padding: 0px; margin: 0px\" \/><br style=\"padding: 0px; margin: 0px\" \/>\u201cWe could shut the firm and attend our friends\u2019 funerals, or we\u2019re going to work harder than we\u2019ve ever worked before to help their families.\u201d<br style=\"padding: 0px; margin: 0px\" \/><br style=\"padding: 0px; margin: 0px\" \/>The decision was unanimous:\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nydailynews.com\/topics\/Cantor+Fitzgerald+LP\" target=\"_blank\">Cantor Fitzgerald<\/a>, Wall Street\u2019s most venerable bond trading firm, would rise from the ashes.<br style=\"padding: 0px; margin: 0px\" \/><br style=\"padding: 0px; margin: 0px\" \/>The stakes were gargantuan.
