Warhols You Can Afford: Andy Warhol’s 1950s Children’s Books<\/h1>\n

Before his Marilyn Monroe and Campbell’s Soup prints, the pop art legend illustrated books\u2014and they’re still available and inexpensive<\/em>
\n<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n

Andy Warhol may be one of only\u00a0seven<\/a>\u00a0artists in the world to have ever sold a\u00a0canvas<\/a>\u00a0for $100 million, but it turns out you don’t have to be a billionaire to own “a Warhol.” In fact, you can do so for\u00a0next to nothing<\/a>.<\/p>\n

In the late 1950s, Warhol belonged to Doubleday’s stable of freelance artists, making a living designing book covers and illustrating dry business books. Shortly before halting his love affair with the corporate world in fear of compromising his flirtations with the art world, he illustrated six stories for the excellent\u00a0Best In Children’s Books<\/em>. (Cue in my recent review of\u00a0little<\/a>–known<\/a>\u00a0children’s books by famous “adult” authors.) Among them was the story “Card Games Are Fun,” from\u00a0Best of Children’s Books #27<\/em><\/a>, published in 1959.<\/p>\n
