Richard Prince Covers Jackson Pollock at Guild Hall<\/h1>\n

To\u00a0imagine\u00a0Richard Prince<\/a>\u00a0doing drip paintings in honor of\u00a0Jackson Pollock<\/a>\u00a0is too linear a concept for what Prince does in Guild Hall’s new exhibition, Richard Prince: Covering Pollock. The iconic abstract expressionist is pure subject for Prince’s collages, repetitions in the manner of Warhol, Rauchenberg-like juxtapositions. He’s evoking a whole lot more than just Pollock in this homage.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Photographs of the serene Springs setting where Pollock and\u00a0Lee Krasner<\/a>\u00a0lived and worked, some with Krasner posing, another with girlfriend\u00a0Ruth Kligman<\/a>, another with the fatal car upturned, collaged with cancelled checks, or snapshots, some pornographic. Prince says in a conversation with\u00a0Lisa Phillips<\/a>, Director of the New Museum, curator of Prince’s first show at the Whitney, \u201cI’m imagining what he would do today if he were still alive. What music he would listen to, what activities he would be involved with?\u201d<\/p>\n

On Friday, the annual Guild Hall summer gala followed the Prince opening, at the historic Gardiner estate. Master of Ceremonies\u00a0Alec Baldwin<\/a>\u00a0made the usual introductions, of movie producer\u00a0Michael Lynne<\/a>, chair of the museum committee, honoree\u00a0Martha Stewart,<\/a>\u00a0DJ Alexandra Richards<\/a>\u00a0(daughter of Keith, he noted) and then Baldwin strongly advised the seated dinner and auction guests including\u00a0Larry Gagosian, Dina Merrill<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0Ted Hartley<\/a>, and\u00a0James Frey<\/a>, \u201cWhen the Clifford Ross comes up, don’t get in my way.\u201d<\/p>\n
