He was 81.<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Yates\u2019s reputation probably rests most securely on \u201cBullitt\u201d (1968), his first American film \u2014 and indeed, on one particular scene, an extended car chase that instantly became a classic. The film stars\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/movies.nytimes.com\/person\/48038\/Steve-McQueen?inline=nyt-per\" class=\"meta-per\" style=\"color: #004276; text-decoration: underline\" target=\"_blank\">Steve McQueen<\/a>\u00a0as a conscience-stricken lone-wolf San Francisco detective, and the chase begins with him behind the wheel of a Ford Mustang in a slow, cat-and-mouse pursuit of killers who were in a Dodge Charger.
