ROASTING RICHARD PRINCE<\/strong>
\nThe roast of artist\u00a0Richard Prince<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0at the\u00a0Friars Club<\/strong>\u00a0on East 55th Street in Manhattan on Nov. 17, 2010, turned out well, by all accounts. RoastmasterGlenn O\u2019Brien<\/strong>\u00a0gave a masterful speech, toasting the guest of honor with witty one-liners — some borrowed from Prince\u2019s own paintings — and a comic reading of the actual jokes contained in\u00a0Sigmund Freud<\/strong>\u2019s\u00a0Wit and Its Relation to the Unconscious<\/em>. “Many of us consider Uncle Miltie to be the originator of appropriation,” O\u2019Brien noted. “He was really an archivist, he assembled the\u00a0Milton Berle Private Joke File<\/em>, which contains over 10,000 jokes, only a small percentage of which have been appropriated by Richard Prince, the Milton Berle of art.”<\/p>\n

<\/span>Accompanying O\u2019Brien on the piano was jazzman\u00a0<\/span>Robert Aaron<\/strong><\/span>. Second on the dais was\u00a0<\/span>Stuart Parr<\/strong><\/span>,\u00a0<\/span>Eminem<\/strong><\/span>\u2019s producer, who read what purported to be congratulatory telegrams from\u00a0<\/span>Larry Gagosian<\/strong><\/span>,\u00a0<\/span>Peter Brant<\/strong><\/span>,\u00a0<\/span>Silvio Berlusconi<\/strong><\/span>,\u00a0<\/span>Arnold Scwharzenegger<\/strong><\/span>\u00a0and other notables, hilarious impersonations that were all done in the proper accents.<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span>Among the attendees, seated around half a dozen tables in the “Milton Berle Room,” dining on halibut or veal chops, was Prince himself, of course, with his wife,\u00a0Noel<\/strong>, plus\u00a0Guggenheim Museum<\/strong>\u00a0curator\u00a0Nancy Spector<\/strong>, artist\u00a0Dan Colen<\/a><\/strong>, photographer\u00a0Terry Richardson<\/a><\/strong>,\u00a0Sotheby\u2019s<\/strong>\u00a0chief\u00a0Lisa Dennison<\/strong>, neurosurgeon\u00a0Dr. Frank Moore<\/strong>\u00a0and his wife\u00a0Nina<\/strong>,\u00a0Cynthia Rowley<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0and husband\u00a0Bill Powers<\/strong>,\u00a0Alberto and David Mugrabi<\/strong>,\u00a0Tony Shafrazi<\/strong>,\u00a0Rachel and Jean-Pierre Lehmann<\/strong>, writer\u00a0James Frey<\/strong>, and\u00a0Adam Lindemann<\/strong>\u00a0and his wife, dealer\u00a0Amalia Dayan<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n
