Did\u00a0NY Mag<\/em>\u00a0Rush Their James Frey Feature Online Only After Learning OfWSJ<\/em>\u00a0Scoop?<\/h1>\n

Readers of both\u00a0NYMag.com<\/a>\u00a0and the\u00a0Wall Street Journal<\/a><\/em>\u2019s website may have noticed that in the wee small hours of the morning, both publications posted similar but competing articles about author\u00a0James Frey<\/strong>\u00a0and Full Fathom Five, the book-packaging company he launched to churn out young adult fiction. As it turns out,\u00a0New York\u2019s<\/em>\u00a0version was rushed online only after the magazine learned that the\u00a0WSJ<\/em>\u00a0was about to scoop them on a story they\u2019d had in the works for weeks.<\/p>\n

The articles\u2019 tones vary drastically. The\u00a0WSJ<\/em>\u2019s\u00a0Katherine Rosman<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0Lauren A. E. Schuker<\/strong>\u00a0offer a measured view of Frey\u2019s operation, noting how little Frey pays the young writers he employs (\u201cthey get $250 upon signing and another $250 upon completion of a book\u201d) as well as how successful its first major product, a story called\u00a0I Am Number Four<\/em>\u00a0that\u2019s being adapted into a movie by\u00a0Michael Bay<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0Steven Spielberg<\/strong>, has been.\u00a0New York Magazine<\/em>\u2019s\u00a0Suzanne Mozes<\/strong>, by contrast, is unabashedly negative in her (much-longer) piece. She accuses Frey of rampant exploitation and implies that the bestselling author is an insufferable, amoral egomaniac (\u201che\u2019s in it to \u2018change the game\u2019 and \u2018move the paradigm\u2019; he won\u2019t write anything that doesn\u2019t change the world,\u201d she writes).<\/p>\n

As it turns out, Mozes has a personal ax to grind against Frey. In her article, she recalls how she was once in talks to write a book for Full Fathom Five. She implies that Frey ultimately declined to work with her because she requested a more equitable contract: \u201cTwenty-eight minutes after I sent an e-mail requesting amendments to the contract, I received an e-mail from Frey rescinding his offer to collaborate. \u2018We loved the idea that we eventually arrived at together,\u2019 he wrote. \u2018At this time, though, we don\u2019t think this going to work out.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

Rosman and Schuker, by contrast, have no connection to Frey outside of their article.<\/p>\n
