WHENEVER THE CONTEMPORARY AUCTIONS<\/strong>\u00a0draw nigh, New York galleries greet the influx of collectors as if it were the Second Coming. Yet, to borrow from Yeats, it wasn\u2019t anarchy that was loosed upon the world last weekend. Instead it was\u00a0Larry Gagosian<\/a>, who announced the addition of his tenth gallery, in Geneva, and led the smoothly coiffed slouching beast with a triple-headed monster of shows for Rauschenberg, Currin, and Kiefer.<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/font><\/p>\n

\u201cBoring, boring, boring!\u201d joked\u00a0Uma Thurman<\/a>. \u201cI don\u2019t know why I bothered.\u201d Currin looked both proud and sheepish. \u201cDoes he know it\u2019s a good show?\u201d someone asked his wife,\u00a0Rachel Feinstein<\/a>. \u201cYeah,\u201d she said. \u201cHe knows.\u201d<\/p>\n

<\/span>So did everyone else, or at least everyone invited to the dinner Gagosian hosted at the Mark Restaurant by Jean-Georges, where Eli and\u00a0Edythe Broad<\/a>,\u00a0Pauline Karpidas<\/a>,\u00a0Helen Marden<\/a>, and\u00a0Marc Jacobs<\/a>\u00a0were among the pals at the head table. Though it sometimes seems that writers do not count for much in the art world, the other guests included a contingent of scribes such as\u00a0Tom Wolfe<\/a>,\u00a0Peter Schjeldahl<\/a>,\u00a0James Frey<\/a>,\u00a0Deborah Solomon<\/a>,\u00a0Calvin Tomkins<\/a>,\u00a0Dodie Kazanjian<\/a>, Michiko Kakutani, and\u00a0Steve Martin<\/a>, whose new art-world novel,\u00a0An Object of Beauty<\/em>, features Gagosian and other recognizable figures that make it seem more than fiction. \u201cWhy is\u00a0Tom Wolfe<\/a>\u00a0here?\u201d wondered\u00a0Jim Currin<\/a>, the artist\u2019s natty physicist father. \u201cI want to meet him!\u201d (He did.)<\/span><\/p>\n
